My wife and I stayed at Baltazar Hotel Budapest for four nights ending Sept 24 2017. Since both the facilities and the services we experienced at this hotel were so dramatically below the 4-Star Classification, and the Trip Advisor’s 5-Star ratings that led us to make our booking a couple of months ago, I felt compelled to write this negative but factual review which is based on our experience. I hasten to add that this experience was in massively STARK CONTRAST to three other 4-Star Class and 5-Star rated hotels we stayed at on this trip in Prague, Vienna, and Olso. All three were also chosen using Trip Advisor ratings. I have provided very complementary yet realistic reviews on Trip Advisor for all three hotels. You may want to read them as your see fit.
To begin with, Baltazar CAN HARDLY BE CLASSIFIED AS A 4-STAR HOTEL. Per the technical definition of hotel Star classification that can be found on quite a number of travel websites, a 3 or 4 Stars hotel must, at the very least must have a “lobby” and “multiple conversation areas” (and of course other amenities). Baltzar has NONE. What it has is a very small space (no more than a few square feet) set aside for registering guest This space is tight and accommodates one guest at the time squeezed in standing position for check in or check out, awkwardly facing the staff across a narrow book shelf that acts as a counter with it’s back facing the guest.

Why am I belaboring this point? Because this reality is not evident from the photos when you try to assess and book the hotels using the website photos as the guide. When you get there, you discover how inconvenient and unpleasant this whole set up can be, especially when you have to use this ordeal to get back and forth to your room.

Second, we ran into some dishonest guest practices that I found to be unique to this hotel, and which I had not seen in all my travels in Europe, States and Canada. Sadly these sort of things sours one's enjoyment that a well-paying guest should not have to be subjected to. Here is what we happened to us: We made our reservation for a “Deluxe Room” for FOUR NIGHTS directly with the hotel far in advance. We read on the website that they automatically upgrade you to a larger room if the reservation is for 4 nights or more. We requested a spacious room at the time of the booking. When we got there, after a long train ride and suffering from a nasty cold, we were led to our room which found to be quite small with only space for a large double bed and a desk/small office chair. No seating area whatsoever. I was too wiped out to ask any question or inquire about alternatives room, or about the promise of upgrade at the time of the booking. But a guest that meets his obligation and trusts the hotel to meet theirs should not have to resort to worry about what he will be dealt by the hotel. After a night or two I finally woke up to the fact that this is not what the hotel website had promised us, and there is actually experiencing ripe off. So, just to be sure of no mistakes, I went back on the hotel websites and found out, sure enough, the promise of upgrade is fully in effect even now. At that point I actually became upset and angry of having paid well and meeting all criteria yet being ripped off, and there was not a damn thing I could do about it.

Based on these factual encounters I can only justify a 2-Star rating for Baltzar hotel. Moreover, I can tell you we came to find out after( the fact) that with a little bit of homework, one has many many choices of reputable 4-Star hotel in this price range in the wonderful Budapest. One does NOT have to contend with what amounts to a intentional hotel malpractice at the hand of this hotel.

Rating the restaurant/cafe as didn't stay in the hotel. We stopped here for coffees. The staff were really helpful and attentive. One of the best service experiences in Budapest. Wasn't cheap but the coffee was good. Would recommend.

I am reviewing the restaurant as we didn't stay in the hotel. We had a very nice meal here on our first night in Budapest. I had a pork chop from the grill menu and I would have to say it was one of the best I have ever eaten. The service was good and the wine was tasty all at a reasonable price.

Very nice hotel in the castle area of Budapest. Staff were very helpful and friendly. But I'll take this opportunity to complain about the hotel and about hotels in general in Europe. What's with those micro mini bathroom trash cans with the foot pedals that are about the size of my oatmeal container? And why can't even deluxe hotels master the art of lighting in bathrooms? Why must I look in the mirror and see several shades of dark and light shadow? Our 2-bedroom suite at Baltazar had 2 glass "windows" between the rooms! If I wanted to stay up late and read, why should the lights in my room disturb someone in the other room? If I need to use the bathroom during the night, I will not turn on the light so as not to disturb others, but at the Baltazar it goes on automatically, along with a loud fan, and stays on for several minutes after you've left the room. Annoying! Oh well. Nice place for the most part.

Sat down for an early lunch having heard good reviews about the place. We had a nice unfiltered beer and for mains, the very nice pike perch highly recommended by the lovely waitress. The service was good, we sat outside in a warm but shaded relaxed atmosphere.
