Dollar Rent A Car

As with most car rental companies in Costa Rip off they will try to get as much money out of you as possible. I heard them trying to scare other customers into buying extra insurance, even lying to them. We were lied to about the cost of extra insurance and despite paying an incredibly high price anyway, had to pay more. Sadly it is very difficult to find an honest car rental company in Costa Rica. Poas rent a car is decent but still very expensive. Do not rent a car unless it is essential. Easier and cheaper to use Uber.

The Dollar car rental office is not at the SJO airport. I don't think any car rental offices are actually at the airport. There is a desk where they walk you to the shuttle that takes you to the office. Dollar rushed us through the inspection process. They even stated we do not care about minor dings and scratches. However when we returned the car they charged us $540 USD for a 1/4 inch chip in the windshield. Could it have happened while we had the car? Maybe. Could it have been there before we rented the car? Probably. And this is after we paid $200-300 for insurance. They seemed to know an awful lot about the process to file a claim with our credit card company. We saw several other renters have good experiences, but I wouldn't risk it. Renters beware!
