Avis Rent a Car International Airport

Great service - excellent value.
No - they are not at the airport but a 10 min shuttle ride away. But I believe that's the same with any of the SJO rental companies. we had booked a Nissan X-trail via British Airways and got a very good deal. I was surprised to find that this included full excess cover too - and the only extra offered to me was tyre and windscreen excess, which I declined. No hard sell at all. The car was spotlessly clean with only 20000km on the clock and was exactly the model we had ordered. The rental staff were smiling, polite and efficient, both at pick-up and at drop off.
Only slight snag was a 15 min wait for the pick-up at the airport, but we were met immediately by an Avis representative who explained that the delay was due to heavy traffic. And boy it was! It took us nearly 2 hours to get out of San Jose to get heading to the east coast. One could argue that Avis might have taken traffic into account at the pick-up, but overall I was very happy with the service.

I rented a car from Avis for my recent trip to Costa Rica. As others have stated, this Avis is not at the airport, however, they provide a free shuttle which takes lots of time to discover (no signage at the airport). Upon arrival, I presented my reservation and the representative told me I need to pay for the $18/day insurance EVEN IF my credit card has coverage. I told him I would refuse it, but he said I couldn't take the car without paying for it. If I had an issue, he said I would have to rent a car elsewhere. I sucked it up and rented the car and will be calling Avis corporate instead. Besides all of this, upon checkout, the representative recommended a hotel nearby called La Riviera. He brought me behind his desk and showed me a price for $65 + tax. The AVIS shuttle took me to the hotel, only for the hotel to try to charge me $105 even. The hotel then called AVIS and the SAME REP from AVIS told me it was $105 just like he showed me. I guess they thought I didn't understand the difference between $65 and $105 in Spanish (which sound somewhat similar), but I will be reporting this office to AVIS for their illegal racket of hotel scams. Please DO NOT use this AVIS even if they seem friendly. You can rent a car comfortably directly at the airport for about half the price.

Make sure you know about the insurance coverage issues in Costa Rica. You must purchase liability insurance and bring proof of collision coverage if you have it. If you do this your rental experience will be fine. Avis was very good and car was excellent.

Nice people, shuttle driver was very fast and helped carry our luggage. The only bad thing is the $1500 hold they place on your credit card if you want to use your own credit card insurance. They also do try and push their insurance on you even though a lot of credit card companies cover 100%. Also be aware of the mandatory Costa Rica government insurance $50+ a day, but you will have to pay this at every rental car location.

This Avis is NOT located at the airport. I don't even think they have a service desk where all the rental car companies are located. We only found the shuttle because we were walking around lost outside the main exit of the airport looking for Avis. Once we got in the shuttle, the driver was nice enough and drove us about 2 miles to the Avis lot. The attendant there was informative and friendly and we had a nice, clean, newer vehicle. I definitely recommend a 4x4 vehicle and one w/ a decent amount of HP if you are driving outside of San Jose. The main roads were well paved but it's very hilly and we saw a lot of older vehicles and trucks overheating on the side of the road.
